Heading into the fourth quarter down 46-40, the Monsoons needed a spark to pull out a win over the 6th seeded Chaminade Eagles in the opening round of the CIF-SS Division 1A playoffs. That’s exactly what they got as Mayfair outscored the Eagles 18-9 in the fourth quarter behind 12 points from the Christopher brothers.

After Chaminade closed the third quarter on a 13-2 run to take the six point lead, freshman Josh Christopher opened the fourth with an and-one to get the Monsoons rolling. A technical foul by KJ Martin moments later put Kyle Small at the line to bring the Monsoons within one.

The teams traded points before Caleb Christopher picked up a layup and a key three pointer to cap off a 14-3 run to open the quarter and put the Monsoons up 54-49 with 4 minutes to go.

The Eagles would bounce back with a pair of layups by Luke Webb, but a missed three left them down 58-55 with a minute to go. Mayfair would miss a shot, but Small picked up a steal. On the Monsoons next shot, J. Christopher picked up an offensive rebound to run more time off the clock.

A missed free throw by Mayfair on the front end of a one-and-one gave the Eagles a chance to tie the game, but Dayton Doucette missed the desperation three and the Monsoons took the win.

After a scoreless first half, C. Christopher scored nine points in the second half and J. Christopher scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter while adding seven rebounds, four steals, two assists, and two blocks to his game total.

The two teams traded blows for much of a tightly-contested first half. Jared Springer hit 2 threes in the first quarter for Mayfair but the Eagles had five players score to take a 14-13 first quarter lead.

With 30 seconds left in half, Martin hit a three pointer to tie the game at 25, but Springer added a third three to give the Monsoons a 28-25 halftime lead. Martin led the Eagles with seven first half points.

Martin would finish the game with 14 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Doucette would contribute 10 points and nine rebounds while Luke Webb added 13 points, seven of which came in the Eagles third quarter run.

The Monsoons advance to host Redlands East Valley (22-7, 12-2) on Friday evening. The Wildcats are the 11th seed in the bracket and defeated Long Beach Jordan 80-73 in their opening round game.
