A pair of early runs proved costly for the Mayfair baseball team in a 2-1 loss to Troy in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

The Warriors did their damage early as they got to Monsoon starter Eric Chavarria in the bottom of the first inning. Otto Kemp blasted a two-run home run which proved to be the difference.

Chavarria calmed down after that in what turned out to be a pitcher’s dual. He allowed only five hits in the game and the Warriors did not score again. While he turned in a quality performance on the mound, Monsoon offense struggled to string hits together. Catcher Matt Gutierrez did his best to bring Mayfair back with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but that was all the Monsoons could muster as they only collected five hits and fell 2-1.

The loss closes out the Mayfair (18-7) baseball season. Troy (22-8) will go on to face El Segundo in the second round.
