The Mayfair cross country teams competed at the Cerritos Invitational on Thursday afternoon. With perfect weather and a flat three mile course through Cerritos High School’s campus across grass and cement, Mayfair’s runners put up several good performances. Runners were separated into three races: the Frosh/Soph boys race, the girls race, and the varsity boys race. Teams competing were

Behind another strong performance from senior Cole Bon, the boys varsity team came in fourth place. Bon started out with the front pack and held his position for the entire race, finishing in fourth with a time of 16:34. Bon’s time was 20 seconds faster than his time at the first Suburban League meet last Thursday. Josiah Jackson was next for the Soons, crossing the line at 17:11. Mayfair had their next eight runners come in within 26 seconds of each other, led by junior Robert Gomez in 26th place at 18:01. Gomez was followed closely by junior Sebastian Frausto in 18:08. Senior Paul Cuellar rounded out the scoring in 29th place with a time of 18:16, followed by Bahman Farihi, Matthew Ayala, Omar Navarro, Fred Torres, and Robert Garcia who took 30th-34th. Luke Sutherland of Marina was the overall winner, covering the course in 16:01.
Cerritos took first, edging out Marina 32-40 and placing four runners in the top 10.
Senior Lisa Higgins was the top finisher for the Monsoons, taking ninth place with a time of 21:33. Junior Tori Castillo used a strong finish to squeak under the 22 minute mark, coming in 14th with a 21:59. Sophomore Veronika Ferrell and senior Alyssa Betancourt were next, both coming in at 22:16 and in 18th and 19th place respectively. Dajah Peterson was the fifth scorer, running a 22:33 to secure 24th place.
The Soons took third place, edging out Downey 81-85. Marina’s young duo of sophomore Grace Ellis and freshman Megan Hines dominated the race, finishing first and second with times of 19:10 and 19:22 and leading Marina to the team victory. They were well ahead of Cerritos’s Jaide Lin who took third in 19:59.
Tyler Stibal ran 18:48, coming in 10th place to pace the frosh/soph team to a third place finish. Sophomores Victor Briseno, Mark Young, and Skylar Willey came in 17th-19th places with times of 19:33, 19:36, and 19:37 respectively.
Sophomore Matthew Enriquez of Downey was the race winner, finishing in 17:23 and leading Downey to a dominant team victory, taking six of the top eight spots.
