The Mayfair Monsoon tennis team finished up the regular season with the individual Suburban League Finals at Cerritos High School on Wednesday afternoon. After taking second place in league play as a team with a 16-3 overall record and 10-2 league record, the Monsoons secured a CIF berth as the 10th ranked team in Division 4. With the team already qualified, Mayfair had the goal of qualifying athletes for the individual CIF playoffs.
The first two rounds took place yesterday with single-set action to advance to the semi-final round. The semi-final rounds consisted of best-of-three sets played to six games with the third set as a 10-point tiebreaker. The finalists in both the singles and doubles qualify for CIF individually.
After successfully moving through the first three rounds yesterday, freshman Brianna Figueroa, the fourth seed, opened the final day of the tournament with a semi-final victory over the top seed in the field from Cerritos, winning 6-2, 6-2. Her semi-final victory clinched one of the two CIF spots in singles and set up a championship match with Rahel George from Cerritos.
Figueroa jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set before conceding a game to George to make it 4-1. Another game for Figueroa put her up 5-1 in the first set, but she would have to wait three more games to secure the first set 6-3.
The second set strategies became clear early for both players. George was more aggressive, attacking the sidelines with more power to get Figueroa moving side-to-side while Figueroa tried to keep George away from the net by attacking the baseline. It was George who executed better, jumping out to a 2-4 lead en route to a 2-6 second set to force the 10-point tiebreaker.
After a lengthy break due to an injury to Figueroa on the final point of the second set, Figuerora came out firing in the tiebreaker, storming to a 10-5 victory to claim the singles championship.
In doubles action, Mia Le and Marinel Chrisostomo opened in a match against Cerritos. After dropping the first set 3-6, the Monsoons bounced back to take the second set 6-3 before Cerritos won the tiebreaker 10-4.
Le and Chrisostomo went on to play in the third-place game against a doubles team from Cerritos. Tied at 4 games apiece in the first set, the Monsoons were able to win the next two games to take the first set. Cerritos responded with a 1-6 second set to force a tiebreaker. Le and Chrisostomo were able to get the jump on Cerritos and win the tiebreaker 10-7 to take third in league.
The Monsoons will continue action with CIF team playoffs coming up next week. Figueroa will participate in individual CIF playoffs after the completion of the team playoffs.
