Coming into the game as the top seeded team in the division 5 bracket, the Mayfair volleyball team was the heavy favorite. Behind the dominant net play of senior Skyler Williams and the well-placed serving of senior Kanana Fuimaono, the top seeded Mayfair Monsoon volleyball team certainly looked the part, defeating Estancia (16-8) in the first round CIF matchup on Tuesday night.
Mayfair got off to rocky start, falling behind 6-9 in the first set. As has been the case for much of the season, it was Williams who got the Soons back on track, serving the Monsoons back into the lead. From there, points were tough to come by for Estancia as Mayfair continued the run to take a 19-16 lead. Then, Williams exerted her full dominance at the nets, recording 4 kills as the Monsoons scored six straight points to end the set.
It was Fuimaono’s turn in the second set as she used 5 aces to guide the Monsoons to a 9-0 lead. Estancia was unable to respond as Mayfair stormed to a 25-13 second set win. Fuimaono added two more aces in the set to give her seven of her nine total aces in the second set.
The nightmare continued for Estancia as they struggled to get the ball over the net. The Monsoons took advantage and once again got the early jump, taking a 15-3 lead en route to a 25-12 match clinching third set. Williams continued to dominate the nets, recording 3 more kills and blocks.
Williams finished the game with 12 kills and 6 blocks while Fuimaono added 15 assists along with her 9 aces.
With the win, the Monsoons (25-2) advance to the second round of CIF, which will be a matchup with Valley Christian on Thursday, November 3. The game will be played at Mayfair at 7 pm.
