For the third time this season, the Mayfair and Valley Christian volleyball teams will face off. The first two matches, on back-to-back games early in the season, the Monsoons pulled out competitive five-set victories over the Crusaders. This time, however, the stakes are much higher with a spot in the CIF-SS division 5 quarterfinals is on the line.
For much of the season, the senior duo of Skyler Williams and Kanana Fuimaono have led the Monsoons to a 25-2 overall record and an undefeated 12-0 Suburban League title run. The pair continued their strong play in Tuesday’s first round CIF victory over Estancia, with Williams recording 12 kills and 6 blocks and Fuimaono contributing 15 assists and 9 aces. Sarah Clausen, Bria Augustine, Joy Umeh, and libero Emma Kailiponi have also played major roles for Mayfair during the season.
The Crusaders, on the other hand, have used a young squad to spark a 19-10 season and undefeated 8-0 Olympic League title run. On the nets, the Crusaders are led by sophomore Madison Holmes and junior Aubrey Schwieger, while junior Megan Lim handles setting duties. Senior Kaylee Westra provides leadership for the Crusaders while playing libero.
Valley Christian is coming off a 5-set victory against La Habra in their first round CIF matchup. After taking the first sets 25-18 and 25-17, the Crusaders dropped a close third set 26-28 and fourth set 24-26. Valley was able to fend off the rally in the fifth set to take the match clinching set 15-11.
Mayfair won the coin flip for location and will host the game on Thursday, November 3, at 7 pm.
