With an emphatic victory over the Valley Christian Crusaders, the top-seeded Mayfair Monsoons advanced to the CIF division 5 quarterfinals. While the Monsoons edged out the Crusaders in 5 set victories the first two matches they played this year, Mayfair dominated from start to finish when it mattered, sweeping the Crusaders 25-13, 25-16, 25-20.
Looking for a quick start, the Monsoons jumped out to a 9-2 lead behind four early kills by Skyler Williams. The Soons continued to roll behind Williams, who finished the first set with 6 kills, and Sarah Clausen, who had 5 of her 9 kills in the first set, and the Soons took the first set 25-13.
Valley hung tough early in the second set to an 8-8 tie, but the Monsoons were just too much for the Crusaders as Mayfair used a 12-3 run to take a 20-11 lead. Kanana Fuimaono had 9 assists in the set, including 5 that set up Williams for kills, while Bria Augustine anchored the Monsoon backline.
The third set played out similar to the second set with the teams playing tight before Mayfair jumped out to a 19-11 lead. Valley would bring the score to 20-17 to put pressure on the Soons, but Clausen came through with two key kills and a block to put the match away 25-20.
Williams finished the game with 12 kills, 4 blocks, and 2 aces while Fuimaono added 22 assists and 3 aces. Sophomore Aubrey Schwieger led Valley with 9 kills while junior setter Megan Lim contributed 15 assists for the Crusaders.
With the win, the Monsoons (26-2) will advance in the bracket to face La Reina of Thousand Oaks on Saturday night.
