The top-seeded Mayfair Monsoon volleyball team is set to face the La Reina Regents of Thousand Oaks in the quarterfinals of the CIF-ss division 5 bracket. Since Mayfair lost the coin flip for location, the match will be played Saturday at 7 pm at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks.
The Monsoons are coming into the quarterfinals after sweeping Estancia of Costa Mesa in the opening round this past Tuesday and dismantling Valley Christian by the scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-20, in Thursday’s second round match. Skyler Williams, Sarah Clausen, and Kanana Fuimaono put up big numbers to lead the Soons. Since non-league action, the Monsoons have only dropped two sets, both to Norwalk in the first play through of the Suburban League season.
The Regents come in as division 5’s ninth ranked team in the final poll released on October 31. They were the undefeated Tri-Valley League Champions and boast a 19-7 overall record. In CIF they defeated Campbell Hall in the first round and swept eight ranked Alta Loma 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. Fellow Tri-Valley member Grace Brethren is ranked second in division 8 while Foothill Tech is ranked ranked sixth in the same division.
La Reina is led by a pair of junior outside hitters in Michelle Schaffer and Ava Hudson. Junior Bethanie Blaise takes care of setting duties while senior Isabella Brignardelo plays libero. Junior Samantha Fochler contributes time as both a setter and a libero as well while the frontline is anchored by Jenna Matus, Holly Carbine, and middle blocker Nicole Orlow.
The winner of the match will advance to the semi-finals and will face the winner of the match between fourth-seeded El Segundo and fifth-seeded Alemany.
