Multiple Teams · Volleyball’s season ends in CIF quarterfinals

After a successful 2016 campaign that saw the Mayfair volleyball team go 24-2 overall and claim another league championship, the Monsoons were defeated by the La Reina Regents in the CIF quarterfinals to bring a close to the season. The Regents were able to take advantage of dominant outside hitting to close sets, sweeping the Monsoons by the scores of 22-25, 20-25, and 18-25.

In the first set, the Monsoons were unable to generate any offensive rhythm, but still fought to a 19-20 score. However, the Regents scored four straight en route to 22-25 first set victory. La Reina juniors Michelle Shaffer and Ava Hudson led the way for the Regents, recording five kills each to outpace the Soons.

The Monsoons came out firing in the second set, but were unable to create any separation or put runs together. La Reina brought the game to a 7-7 tie and then took over, scoring 13 of the next 17 points to jump out to a 20-11 lead. The Monsoons fought back with senior Kanana Fuimaono recording 9 assists and Williams adding 7 second-set kills, but Shaffer’s defensive efforts and offensive prowess on the outside were too much to overcome as the Regents took the second set 20-25.

With the tough second set loss, the Monsoons came out flat in the third set, falling behind 1-6. Sophomore libero Emma Kailiponi recorded six digs in the third set, keeping several plays alive with diving saves, but Mayfair was unable to recover and La Reina rolled to an 18-25 match clinching third set.

As has been the case all season, the senior duo of Williams and Fuimaono led the Soons statistically. Williams finished the game with 9 kills, 2 blocks, and two aces while Fuimaono contributed to 17 assists and 2 blocks. Shaffer recorded an impressive 14 kills, 17 digs, and 3 aces for La Reina while Hudson had 13 kills of her own and setter Samantha Fochler contributed 22 assists.

With the loss, the Monsoons season finished at 26-3 while La Reina will advance to the semi-finals to face Alemany with a spot in the CIF championship on the line.
