Tied 0-0 with less than 10 minutes to play, it looked like Mayfair and La Mirada were heading to overtime and a potential tie. That all changed when the Monsoons pieced together a beautiful play capped off by an Angel Villalobos goal to give the Monsoons a critical 1-0 win as league season begins to wind down.
After a pair of great passes down the field got Carlos Perez the ball on the right wing, the junior midfielder sent in a perfect cross to Villalobos who blasted the ball past Matador goalkeeper Isaac Barajas with a scissor-kick for the game-winning goal.
The Matadors had a couple of opportunities to net an equalizer but Omar Navarro and the Monsoon defense thwarted all threats to preserve the 1-0 win.
Both teams fought through a tightly contested first half. The Matadors had the first opportunity of the game in the seventh minute when a well-placed free kick rolled through the box untouched.
Esteban Camacho countered immediately with a rocket from 35 yards out that bounced off the crossbar. From there the Monsoons controlled possession and won the 50-50 balls. Perez, Camacho, and Christian Lemus strung together several plays with solid passing but the Monsoons were unable to capitalize.
Nelson Avalos only had to make one save in the first half before Navarro came on in the second half to complete the shutout.
Jimmy Flores, Jonathon Martinez, Kevin Fremgen, Salvador Ponce, and Jared Provost were an iron wall in the backfield, stamping out several Matador opportunities throughout the game.
With the win the Monsoons now sit in third place in league at 6-3. Bellflower leads the tight race is at 7-2, Norwalk is in second at 7-3, and La Mirada is in fourth at 5-3-2.
Next up is a matchup with the Artesia Pioneers on Friday, February 3. The Pioneers are the only league opponent the Monsoons have not beaten this season.
