After a quarterfinal appearance last year, the Mayfair girls basketball team is set to begin a new playoff run in the CIF-Division 2A bracket when they host Leuzinger of Lawndale at 7pm on Thursday.
The Olympians (18-10, 4-6) are the fourth place team out of the Pioneer League and are currently ranked 11th in the final CIF-SS regular season poll.
Both Mayfair and Leuzinger hold wins over Marymount this season.
Senior guard Brooke Scott, an All-CIF player last year, leads the Olympians with 15 points per game. She has scored 20 or more points seven times, including a season-high 36 points against South East High School, a game in which she recorded a triple-double with 10 rebounds and 10 steals in the game as well. Seniors Heaven Thompson and Rebecca Oderoha both average 9 points per game as well.
Sophomore Ayah League has provided stability and balance for the Monsoons while the Briauna Thompson, Kaylin Dent, and Asolupe Paulo are relentless on the interior. League is averaging 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and 2.5 steals per game as the all-around facilitator while Thompson leads the team with 13 points and eight rebounds per game. Dent and Paolo crash the boards hard for a Monsoon team that is 21st in the state in rebounding. Sarah Clausen, Naana Ahinasi, and Brianna Portillo are all regular contributors as well.
The winner will earn a matchup with the winner of the Covina-West Covina matchup. Covina is ranked sixth in the final CIF-SS Division 2A polls.
