After a slow start, the Mayfair boys basketball team fell behind early in the second quarter and were unable to bridge the gap as they fell 71-60 to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Panthers in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs.
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-3 lead before Mayfair closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run.
However, that run did last for the Monsoons as they went ice cold with several missed layups, free throws, and an 0 for 6 mark from behind the arc in the first half. The Panthers took advantage and outscored the Monsoons 21-10 in the second quarter behind 9 points from sophomore Wony’a Singleton to take a 33-20 lead to the half.
Mayfair looked ready to break through with a big run several times in the second half. Kyle Small ended the drought from the 3-point line with 5:20 left in the game to cut the score to 38-27. Small and Josh Christopher would score nine points each in the third quarter but the Panthers kept pace with the Monsoons and took a 51-41 lead into the fourth.
The Monsoons would pull within 10 points a couple times in the fourth quarter but were unable to bridge the gap and fell 71-60.
Small would finish the game with a game-high 25 points while Christopher added 18 points.
Singleton led the Panters with 18 points.
Peninsula will advance to the semi-finals where they await the winner of the Corona Del Mar-Pasadena game.
