Three Monsoon wrestlers placed in the top 9 at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet in Ontario on Saturday afternoon to qualify for the CIF State Championships next week in Bakersfield.
Favian Real (152) led the way with a fourth place finish for the Monsoons. Real won his first three matches on Friday to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals. In the semis he was defeated by eventual champion Joshua Kim of Santiago before picking up a win in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third place match. Real was unable to beat second-seeded Nasir Grissom of Santa Monica and was forced to settle for third.
Robert Eredia (126) advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the consolation bracket. He won his first match on Saturday to clinch a State berth, but dropped his second match to fall to the seventh place match where he won by default to finish in seventh.
Ernie Aguilera (106) finished Friday 2-1 with a second-round loss. Like Eredia, he opened Saturday with a win to guarantee a spot at State. He would drop a 5th round consolation match before claiming seventh with a win in the seventh place match.
Khalil Howard (145), Jarrod Nunez (182), and Jose Alvarez (113) fell short of making it to Saturday’s action.
Real, Eredia, and Aguilera will make their first trips to the CIF State Championships next Friday in Bakersfield.
