Three Mayfair wrestlers concluded their seasons at the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield over the weekend.
Robert Eredia advanced the farthest at 126 pounds. After dropping a tough opening round match to ninth-seeded Tyler Deen of Buchanan, Eredia picked up three consolation wins to become the only wrestler from Mayfair to move on to Saturday’s action.
In his first match on Saturday he struggled to get going and dropped his final match of the season 7-2. His performance ranks him among the top 20 wrestlers in California at 126 pounds.
Ernie Aguilera fell to the consolation bracket as well after a loss to sixth-seeded Jacob Allen of Poway in the opening round of the 106 pound bracket on Friday. Aguilera picked up two wins before dropping a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to just miss out on advancing to Saturday.
Favian Real also received a tough opening round draw and lost a 9-4 decision to 12th seeded Russel Rucklos of Foothill in a hard fought match that was much closer than the score indicated. He struggled to bounce back in the first consolation round where his season came to an end.
The tournament brings a close to a successful campaign that saw the team claim a Suburban League Championship, a CIF Western Division Dual Championship, a fourth place finish at the CIF Central Division Individual Championships, nine Suburban League Champions, six Masters qualifiers, and three state qualifiers.
