The Mayfair boys track and field team performed well at Friday night’s Suburban League finals with three league championships, nine top-3 performances, and seven CIF Southern Section Division 2 Prelims qualifiers in seven events and eight spots.
Leading the way was the Suburban League champion 4x400m team. Cameron Carson, Kevin Cole, Chris Adimora, and Niko Billew teamed up to run a dominant 3:32.28, defeating second place Cerritos by nearly two seconds.
Cole won a championship of his own in the 300 m hurdles. The senior ran a 41.98 to claim the title. Carson was not far behind in third place with a time of 42.88. Both athletes qualified for CIF.
Junior Kameron Small was the final league champion with a jump of 20-05 to win the long jump. He was also a member of the 4x100m team that placed second with a time of 43.76. The Monsoons were edged out by Bellflower, who won with a time of 43.45.
Also on that team were Adimora, Billew, and Sirr Parker. Adimora and Billew each qualified for CIF in three events. Along with the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, Adimora placed third in the 100m with an 11.35, while Billew finished third in the 200m with a time of 22.61.
Josiah Jackson was the final CIF qualifier. The senior’s 2:01.37 was good enough for second place in league and a spot at CIF
Angel Mora wrapped up the top-3 placing with a second place finish in the 110m hurdles. He ran a 16.24, but finished just shy of Bellflower’s Merrell Jasper, who won with a time of 16.03, and the CIF qualifying mark of 16.14.
The CIF Southern Section Division 2 prelims will be held at Moorpark High School on Saturday.
