It may have taken a while, but the Mayfair baseball team eventually got it done against John Glenn on senior night. After each team scored one run through the first two innings, Zach Morris delivered the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to help the Monsoons pick up the 2-1 win.
Glenn scored in the top of the first with an RBI by Sergio Sandoval. In the bottom of the second, Eric Chavarria drove in a run to even things up. From there, it was a pitchers dual.
Eight and half innings later it was still 1-1. Once again it was Zach Morris who came through with the clutch hit for the Monsoons. The senior drove in the game winning run with a walk-off single to end the the marathon game in the 11th inning.
On the mound, Landon Anderson and Chavarria combined for eleven innings of six-hit, one-run pitching. Anderson, a senior, started the game off with nine and one thirds inning pitched, only giving up six hits and recording six strike outs. Chavarria stepped in and pitched a perfect one and two thirds inning to close the game out and earn the win.
Mayfair (17-5, 9-2) clinched at least second place in the Suburban League with the win.They travel to Glenn (15-12, 6-5) on Thursday for the second game of the two game series. La Mirada (22-5, 10-1) sits in first and will play Cerritos (18-12, 6-5) on Thursday. The Matadors defeated the Dons 3-2 on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of the league title.
