The Monsoon offense simply exploded. After hitting only eight home runs in the regular season, the Mayfair softball team went deep four times in a 9-5 CIF Southern Section Division 3 Wild Card win over Palos Verdes on Tuesday afternoon.
Haylee Ridge got the Monsoons started early. Her first inning two-run blast gave Mayfair a 2-0 lead before Jasmine Apodoca added a solo shot in the second inning.
Haley Davis and Teena Spoolstra scored two more in the third inning on a past ball. Ridge reached base a second time with a walk to set up another two-run home run, this time by Julia Enzmann, to extend the lead to 7-0 at the end of the third.
Palos Verdes got three runs back in the fourth, but freshman Mariah Melendez connected for the Monsoon’s fourth home run of the game to make it 8-3.
Two more runs in the sixth inning brought the Sea Kings within three runs and runners on second and third. Stram, however, showed grit as she worked out of the jam to preserve lead.
Ridge picked up a third RBI in the bottom of the sixth with an insurance RBI single that brought Makenna Stram home.
Stram reached base three times with two singles and double. She also took the mound for Mayfair, striking out eight batters in a complete game performance.
Mayfair (16-7) will now head to the first round where San Dimas awaits. The Saints (18-9) were the Valle Vista League champions.
