The Mayfair softball team will look to continue their hot streak on Tuesday afternoon when they host the Murrieta Mesa Rams in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
The Monsoons (17-7, 8-4) have hit seven home runs in the past two games and have outscored their two playoff opponents by a combined score of 19-8. Last Tuesday they defeated Palos Verdes 9-5 in a wild card game before defeating San Dimas 10-3 on Thursday to move on to the second round. Haylee Ridge and Julia Enzmann each homered twice last week, while Makenna Stram picked up the win in both games.
Murrieta Mesa (20-10, 5-5) is playing in their first postseason in program history after finishing third in the tough Southwestern League. Most notably, the Rams took the undefeated and top-ranked team in the nation (MaxPreps), Norco, to the brink in a 1-0 loss in early April.
The Rams are seeded fourth in Division 3 and are coming off an 11-0 win over Temescal Canyon. Pitcher Autumn Pease struck out six and only allowed one hit in five innings of action. Presleigh Pilon and Zoey Clark each had three hits, a home run, and three RBIs to lead the Rams.
Murrieta Mesa has eight players batting over .300, with three of them batting over .400. Lauren Randle leads the way with a .489 average at the plate and a team-high 27 RBIs.
On the mound, Pease picked up a majority of the workload throughout the season. The junior started 27 games with an 18-9 record, 1.40 ERA and 217 strikeouts.
The game will start at 3:15pm at Mayfair on Tuesday with the winner advancing to to the quarterfinals to play either Arroyo Grande or fifth-seeded Knight.
In other Suburban League news, league champion Cerritos and second-place La Mirada also advanced to the second round of the Division 3 playoffs, giving the Suburban League three of the final 16 teams in the division. Fourth-place Artesia lost their first round Division 5 game 11-7 to top-seeded South Torrance.
